The former Champions League winner from Steaua is now held in a Hospital after he tried to take his live.


Ten days ago Lucian Bălan was kicked out from Steaua's youth department and then he tried to take his own life. The former "red-blues" player from back in the 80's took a fist full of pills with alcohol.

He was brought to the Municipal Hospital from Sighetu Marmaţiei where the doctors saved him. He will be kept under observation for one week. GSP called the hospital yesterday and the secretary let us talk to Lucian. "So you can convince yourself that he is ok, i'm going to put him on the phone", said the nurse.


- Mister Bălan...
- Who is it? What happened?

- Mister Bălan, we are calling you from Gazeta Sporturilor. Is it true that you tried to take your own life?
- I'm in a hospital (he doesn't say anything for about 10 seconds)....

- Can you hear us?
- Yes, I am in a hospital in Sighetu Marmaţiei. I am at the psychiatry, I am stabil, but i'm still sick... Who am I speaking to?

- Gazeta Sporturilor... What happened?
- My problemes... I have big problems that I want to sort them out when I will be back in Bucharest. I am in a tough situation, but I don't want to say more.

- Leaving Steaua hurt me... They wanted to get rid of us. I've had many problems after Victor Piţurcă left. I don't want to say anything now.

- I can't tell you if I really wanted to kill myself or not! I'm sick and I want to get better as soon as possible. Every man has his problems.

- Who cares what I say? I don't want to say anything, I just want to be well.

- Yes. I have few money left. I'm lucky that my friends help me. My ex-teammates gave me some money. People try to help you but you also need God on your side.
