The sword team, coached by Mihai Covaliu, brought yesterday to the Romanian sport the first world title after a break of two years

Al in all, Romania won a world title. The first one in 2009. Actually, the first one since October 2007 and up to the moment. This is the performance of the swordsmen Rareş Dumitrescu, Florin Zalomir, Tiberiu Dolniceanu and Cosmin Hănceanu in the competition for teams from the World Championship from Antalya.

The victory is even more appreciated because it was obtained against the world’s leader of the moment, the team of Italy.

The struggle for gold started spiritless for the "tricolors", who were leaded at the beginning with only two, three touches, but then they remained behind the Italians at a distance of 10 points. The last duel, the one between the famous Aldo Montano and the recent vice world champion, Rareş Dumitrescu, was decisive. The Romanian managed to do something which nobody hoped for. To recover from 34-40, to equalize at 42 and to lead back the score in Romania’s advantage: 45-44.

THE ACKNOLEDGEMENT OF THE COACH COVALIU
The world gold medal confirms not only the present value of the four swordsmen, but it brings also the fast confirmation, of the coach Mihai Covaliu.

The winner of the bronze medal at the Olympic Games from Beijing took a year ago the position of coach of the national team of sword, and now he returns to Turkey with two medals: Rareş Dumitrescu’s silver medal at individual sabre and the gold on team sabre.

“A dramatic final, close to infarct, in which the Italians came down with the heart, eventually. Covaliu was a genius as a sportsman, and now he is a genius as coach"
Ana Pascu, the president of FRS

"If the Canadians are inclined to build in Romania, it means that they are benevolent"
Doina Melinte, secretary of state in MTS, within a press conference
