Ilie Dumitrescu was shocked when 4.000 fans started asking for his resignation. He later announced live on DigiSport that he will be leaving Steaua because of the fans.
Ilie Dumitrescu had tears in his eyes after the referee blew the final whistle of the game against Astra. The fans wanted his resignation and the ex-number 8 couldn't handle the pressure any more. He announced his resignation live on DigiSport just 15 minutes after the game ended.
"I joined Steaua with an open heart, but I have decided to step down because I'm not wanted here. I'm resigning because of the fans. Maybe I deserved this treatment. I really didn't give anything to this club, no? It was an important match for us and we could have used the support of our fans. I was expecting a packed stadium, but I was wrong. We played poorly today. I hope that Steaua's next coach will do his job better and that he will have the full support of the crowd", said Ilie.

"I still have my full confidence that this squad can win the championship. I hope that the next coach will be a crowd favorite and that he will improve what Piturca did here and the little that I did.... I told the players that they can still win this. I want to thank Gigi Becali for always trusting me. He has my respect and my full support and I will help him when he will be in need. The fans have fulfilled their objective by getting rid of me but I assure them that they will never take the team away from Becali", continued Dumitrescu.
The 4.000 fans started calling for Ilie Dumitrescu's resignation just 5 minutes before the end of the match. When the match ended Ilie stopped at the middle of the pitch and applauded the crowd. His gesture didn't calm the fans who started singing: "Go Ilie, go Ilie, go and leave us!".
