Juan Martin del Potro made what many people believed it is impossible to do: he defeated Roger Federer in the US Open final in five sets, 3-6, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2. This is the first US Open won by the Argentinean.
"When I was lain down on the ground, a lot of things passed through my mind. First of all I thought of my family and my friends. I don’t know how I can explain this victory, it was my dream. My dream came through. I am going home with the trophy and this is the most beautiful sensation I could have ever had in my entire life", said Juan Martin del Potro at the end of the match.
This was the first final of five sets at US Open, since 1999 when Andre Agassi played with Todd Martin and the greatest defeat which took place lately when no. 6 defeated the winner of 15 titles of Grand Slam and no. 1 in the world. This was also del Potro’s first victory against Federer of 7 matches.
"I had bad luck, and Juan Martin’s play was extraordinary. He played every single chance and, in the end, he was better. Five titles were great, another four were the same, but six titles would have been a dream. You cannot have everything. I had an extraordinary summer and a good tournament. I am not disappointed because I played well at US Open. I had enough chances to win, but unfortunately I haven’t profited by them", said Roger Federer.
Del Potro became the second Argentinean who won US Open after Guillermo Vilas, in 1977.
