Dorinel Munteanu was born on 25th June, 1968 at Grădinari, the county Caraş-Severin. He started to play football at Metalul Bocşa in 1986, and after that he moved to CSM Reşiţa, for which he played until 1988. He also played at FC Olt and Inter Sibiu before arriving at Dinamo in 1991; at this team he had the first great satisfactions as a football-player, won the title in 1992.
He then left abroad, at Cercle Bruges (1993-1995), playing also in Germany at FC Koln (1995-1999) and Vfl Wolfsburg (1999-2003). He came back in Romania in 2003 at Steaua, winning another champion title in Ghencea, in 2005. Since the summer of that year he moved to Cluj, where he became coach-player. He brought the team to the Intertoto final Cup, losing the qualification in UEFA with Lens (1-1, 1-3). Dorinel then trained FC Argeş, which demoted, and FC Vaslui. He left from both teams with row, being accused by the sponsors Penescu and Porumboiu that he made the matches of other teams.
In the summer of this year, "Munti" engaged himself to create a competitive team at Universitatea Cluj, but he couldn’t bring the plan off, being determined by Gigi Becali to take Steaua after Marius Lăcătuş’s resignation. He signed on two years, with a warranty of 200.000 euro if he is removed, but also with the condition that the sponsor from Steaua will not get involved in organizing the team.
The honors list as a technician of the coach Dorinel Munteanu against Dinamo is the following one: 3 victories, 2 defeats, 0 ties (CFR-Dinamo 1-0, Dinamo-CFR 5-0, Dinamo-FC Argeş 2-1, Dinamo-FC Vaslui 0-2, FC Vaslui-Dinamo 2-1).
